This is the time of year when drivers need to be extra careful about deer on the roads. What drives a deer to freeze on the road when a car approaches? According to my Google search, a deer freezes because of “light-induced immobilization.”
When a deer is caught in headlights, they may freeze due to a phenomenon called “light-induced immobilization.” This happens because the sudden bright light can cause temporary paralysis or confusion in the deer, making them unable to move or react. -GOOGLE
Something similar can happen to some people when faced with fear. Children can be extremely acceptable to this phenomenon. We as parents want to protect our children from any harm. Especially the very young and innocent. Don’t you agree?
How can you protect your children from what they see? Most parents are obviously of what their children see on the internet. They hand them an iPad or phone to keep them occupied. We all have done this including myself. I was a single father raising two children under three years old. The TV was not just a TV, it was our babysitter.
I was oblivious to the impressions that were made by the shows I watched as a child until I grew up. My personality is made up of a collection of cartons and the three stogies. Sprinkle in a little Gillon’s island with the original Batman.
Back when I was a child the internet was in its infancy. A little-known fact: The internet was first invented in 1965 for military purposes, and then expanded to the purpose of communication among scientists. The invention also came about in part by the increasing need for computers in the 1960s. The official birthday of the Internet is January 1, 1983. Prior to this, the various computer networks did not have a standard way to communicate with each other. A new communications protocol was established called Transfer Control Protocol/Internetwork Protocol (TCP/IP). The government still has its own internet called the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET).
If we compare the internet in 1984 to the version we have today it would be like the horse and buggy to a Lamborghini. It’s amazing and scary to drive.
The internet is all grown up and full of good things and bad things. It is going to be Forty years old in 2024. People have corrupted it with shady dealing and scams to pray on the ignorant. Those less knowledgeable in the ways of thinking like a thief. To catch a thief you need to think like a thief.
To do anything worth doing you need to first start with an education. Learn by watching, hearing, and doing. Some of us learn better with all of these combined like myself. However, when you learn how to do something, it’s yours forever to hold on to that knowledge and pass it on before you die.
I want to get back to our children and how they learn things today. Sure school and your example are at the top of the list. However, technology has a bigger role today than it did for us. Most teenagers have several technical devices now days. How they use them will determine what kind of adults they will become. Setting a good example is extremely important at this time of their lives. Setting up a good schedule of activities and rules about screen time can help but not solve the problem. The internet wants your child to go to the dark side. They even call it the “dark web”. Drug dealers are not only on the corners of streets but inside your computer now. Porn is a multi-billion dollar industry because of easy access to the internet.
How do we protect our most precious little children? How do we make sure they turn out to be good productive adults? The questions are for you to decide. However, I might be of some help. The internet can be filtered and cleaned for your children. Keeping them from getting sidetracked from their studies. Don’t let your children be like that deer in the headlights when it comes to the internet. Ask me how I can help. Feel free to contact me for more information.
