Cybersecurity

What do you think Cybersecurity means to you? Well, let’s take a look at Cyber-security. You probably know what security means but how about cyber? What is cyber? Here’s the definition of Cyber below.

“Cyber is an adjective or prefix that means relating to or characteristic of information technology, virtual reality, and computers. For example, “cyberterrorism”, “cyberwarfare”, or “cyberattack” are all technology domains that use the combining form cyber-.”

Much clearer? Probably not unless your job relates to Information Technology (IT). Do you need to understand what Cybersecurity is to you? You might think: Why bother to learn about something that doesn’t affect me? Although, you’d be surprised that it affects everyone. It doesn’t matter if you never go online or have a computer.

I get the same answer every time I ask a new client about the security of their network. We don’t need security. Everything we do is online through your software. They are responsible for the security.

Wrong, Wrong! They are responsible for their network, not yours. Just because you use their software or web login on the web doesn’t make you safe. Let me explain it in more detail.

Let’s say you’re a veterinarian clinic. You use a purchased software from a reputable company to run your business. It’s cloud-based. ( basically running on another company’s computer). You login in with the Edge browser that’s installed on Windows by default. However, your browser was hijacked with a key logged because one of your staff clicked on a funny cat video. Now not only is your entire network infected but your login to your business software is now in the hands of some pretty bad guy.

What can they/he/she do? For starters change your password and redirect the recovery email to theirs. Now what do you do? Wait for the phone to ring. Wait for an email from them. Never going to happen. That attack is called Man in the Middle. He’s got your keys and now the fun begins for him.

Scary? Well, this can and does happen often. The question is how long until he finds you? How long can your business survive without the information it needs? Sure you can call your software company and ask them to reset the password. Maybe you are not the only one whose software was compromised. Get in line for a call back from support. Maybe you opted not to buy the premium support subscription to save money.

This is only one scenario that can happen. The rest are far much worse. The infection of a network can spread like cancer. Connected devices are like appendages on an octopus, if one gets infected it can spread to all.

There are ways to protect your electronic devices from unauthorized access. However, that involves cybersecurity. It’s a broad term to explain what we do to keep your business safe.

If you are a business owner or want to learn more about cybersecurity for your network get in touch with us. We explain things in a way everyone can understand.

Just like the locks on your doors and windows keep out intruders, we keep the bad guys out of your devices.

In light of the recent breaches at hospitals, schools, and Cascios we can assume that AI is being used by bad actors. The need has changed dramatically since AI was introduced to the system. More is needed to protect your system. Let’s talk about this problem and how we can solve it. Call me today before it’s too late.
